Digital Nomads: How to prepare for returning home

After a long lasting journey, here you are again, back where you started. Still, chances are you are not the same person as you were when you began calling yourself a Digital Nomad. While the grass might be greener elsewhere, there is no place like home. We are positive you wanted to come back many times during your journey, and yet, here you are now, nostalgic about the unpredictable life.

How to prepare for returing home as a digital nomad

However, steer those thoughts away, as coming back home might actually be a lot better that you have hoped for. Still, this article will try to remind you of the positive sides, as well as shed some light of the negative ones, just for good measure. Don’t worry, it won’t be as bad as you might think, we’ll also share some tips on how to get through the rough times. With all that said, let’s begin.

Bills, bills, bills

Now, we know that you probably also had some bills to pay, no matter where you lived, but chances are the costs didn’t run as high as back in the U.S. There is no going around this one. Living in a cheaper country was fine and dandy while it lasted, but you will have to get adjusted to the new-old circumstances. The good news is, there are lots of opportunities around you, everywhere you look. If you are strapped for cash in the beginning, don’t be afraid to ring some friends up and ask for advice. It might open a whole new career path you never even thought of.

There is nothing better than home cooked meals

Testing the international cuisine might not be for everybody, and it is not hard to find a Digital Nomad complaining about the lack of their favorite dishes. However, with you back home, those problems are now a thing of the past. Even if you loved the foreign recipes, there is no reason why you shouldn’t continue making them. At least now you probably know how to do it, and if not, Internet has always been your friend. There is nothing better than having a full belly of your favorite childhood dish, trust me on this one.

Sleeping in your own bed

In case you lived a nomadic lifestyle for a long time, chances are you’ve experienced it to the fullest. While it is great to meet foreign cultures and expand your horizons, there are times when it’s not that glamorous. No matter how adaptable you are, if you had to spend a night on a dirty bed, chances are you will hate that experience. When you return home, you return to the comfort of your apartment, and believe me, you won’t even realize how much you missed it until you spend the night there.

Adjust to the new surroundings

Just when you created new habits, you have to return to the old ones. This might seem like a lot of work, but take it one day at a time. At first, the different way of thinking might seem empty to you, but there are good people everywhere, you just have to look. Our culture is much more pop orientated, and that will probably bug you, but it will also steer you towards meeting new people with similar interests. The worst thing you can do is wrap yourself inside a cocoon, wishing you were someplace else. Get out there and meet individuals with stories similar to yours. You will be surprised by just how many of those people were around you and you haven’t even noticed.

Wanna know something else? It will never be the same place you left behind. Life goes on at an incredible pace, and you should never really dwell on what happen in the past. Embrace the change and catch up with some old friends to share old memories and create new ones. That is what life is all about.
