A Guide to Travelling Light

We all know the challenges of airline travel: rising checked bag fees, delays, crowds, and—God forbid—lost luggage. Traveling, whether for business or pleasure, should be about the journey, not the hassle. Having only a carry-on is the best way to simplify the travel process and travel light, and let you get on with the important stuff. Below, Standard’s listed some great tips to being a minimalist.

Travel out of one bag or a backpack

Find the right bag

We all know the challenges of airline travel: rising checked bag fees, delays, crowds, and—God forbid—lost luggage. Traveling, whether for business or pleasure, should be about the journey, not the hassle. Having only a carry-on is the best way to simplify the travel process and travel light, and let you get on with the important stuff. Below, Standard’s listed some great tips to being a minimalist.

Use apps whenever possible

When on business trips, Forbes suggests you ditch the laptop and rely on your phone or tablet. In case you didn’t know, there’s an app for almost everything and it’s probably free. Examples: Converter+ converts currencies and measures of weight, altitude, and temperature; iTranslate is the most advanced translating app and can decipher dialects and non-Latin languages; Kayak helps you book and purchase nearly every travel service. And the list goes on and on.

Choose your shoes wisely

Shoes weigh a lot and are awkwardly shaped. Condé Naste Traveler recommends  that you bring an elite team of footwear when traveling. Flips-flops, they say, are the most useful shoes to bring—they are light, malleable, and can be used as hotel slippers or beachwear. Dress shoes are also necessary if you are on business or plan to hit the town. Sneakers pack light and are good for walking about. And if you must bring boots, wear them in transit, so as not to burden your bag.

Bring less; buy more

We all want to save money when traveling, but sometimes you have to pay for convenience. Travel Dudes suggests lightening your load by purchasing items as you need them. Toiletries, snacks and supplements, and even clothes and shoes can be bought while abroad. And you may even find yourself in a country where these items are sold at cheaper prices than at home.

Get acquainted with packing cubes

Packing cubes are a great way to save space, reduce clutter, and speed up the packing and unpacking process. Made of fabric and sealed with a zipper, these containers are meant to fit within a larger carry-on, backpack, or suitcase. Packing cubes are great for keeping similar items together, packing for specific day or event, and separating dirty clothes. They keep clothes from getting wrinkled, and can themselves be converted into shoulder bags and backpacks for day trips.

As always, travel safe and happy... and don't forget to send us your pictures while on the road!
