Travel Industry Careers in 2016

Travelling is good for the soul, but bad for your wallet, right? Would you believe us if we told you that there is a way to turn it all around and even come out with some profit? Pay attention to what we say, because it might be easier than you think. There are a number of ways in which you can earn money in the travel industry, but in this article we will focus on jobs that provide the best career possibilities. So, let’s begin.

Travel Industry Careers

Travel Agent

If you are interested in starting a career as a travel agent, you would probably want to get some sort of certificate first, but once you do that, you can start living your dreams. What are the benefits of this job? How about traveling the world, and getting paid to do so? That sounds like a pretty sweet deal to us. OK, let’s be honest and say that you’ll have to learn a few things first, but that comes with time, and you will keep honing your skills as time moves along. There are a bunch of agencies out there, constantly looking for new employees, and after you gain the experience, you can even open one of your own. What’s not to like?

Destination Expert

This type of job is relatively new, and it is perfectly suited for digital nomads. Have you lived in a certain region for a long time? Even if you don’t live there anymore, that can open up a career opportunity. If you enjoy helping other people and have some organizational skills, this is the job you’ve been waiting for. It can be quite difficult to find out which restaurants serve the best food, what festivals you cannot miss or which hostels offer the best accomodation. A destination expert needs to provide answers to those questions and give honest reviews. Do you think you would be up to the challenge?

Travel writer or blogger

A travel writer is not exactly a new profession, but it is now more popular than ever. It doesn’t matter if you want to write for a magazine, website or even your own blog, if you have a way with words, you will be able to make an honest living out of it. Sure, the editors might be demanding, constantly trying to push new deadlines, and in order to have a good blog, you will need to devote a lot of time and energy into it, but trust me when I say, it is all worth it. The best thing about this job is that you won’t have to go all in on the first attempt. A lot of bloggers are searching for ghost writers, or you can simply find a part-time freelance gig, just to get you started. If you see that you have what it takes, you can approach the subject in a more serious manner. Furthermore, if you have a quality camera, and a good on-screen personality, you can record videos as well and put them on your blog or Youtube. The most important thing is to have a lot of fun in the process.

Travel counselors

In the early days, this type of career path meant that you have to work from your travel agency's desk. Of course that digital nomads wouldn’t find this very appealing, but times have changed. Nowadays, you can work from home, or take work with you wherever you go. Don’t be fooled into thinking that this job is the same as destination experts. While destination experts offer detailed information of a certain location, travel counselors aren’t necessarily affiliated with any particular location. Their job is to listen to their clients needs and find the best possible offers to match their needs. Unlike travel agents, they won’t be asked to be tour guides, but they will need to have a vast knowledge about destinations that the company has to offer. Perhaps this job offers the best insight on how the travel industry works, and it can be a great step towards opening your own agency one day. Dare to dream big!
