How to stay healthy while constantly travelling as a Digital Nomad

Jet lag, poor nutrition and a bad posture are just some of the problems digital nomads encounter along the way, that can be detrimental to their well being. Being a digital nomad is all the freedom it provides, but you cannot be free if you lose your health. Some people consider digital nomads as tourists, but the reality is we also have to work for a living, and that can bring a lot of stress to our lives. How do you deal with it when you are thousands of miles away from home, and people you know?

How to Stay Healthy as a Digital Nomad

In this article, we will try to answer that question, as well as point to certain things you shouldn’t be doing if you want to stay healthy. Don’t get us wrong, you shouldn’t avoid these activities completely, just don’t turn them into a habit. If you follow our guidance, you will stay fit and fresh for a long time.

  1. Get a good night of sleep

At the very beginning, we will tackle the biggest problem most nomads encounter. Perhaps you like to travel a lot, so you constantly switch time zones, maybe your job forces you to work late hours, or you simply like to party. No matter what the reason may be, you need to know that there is nothing better for full body recovery than sleeping. Even if you have to work late nights, small naps during the day will do wonders to keep your energy levels high.

  1. Stress Is A Killer

It might sound strange to a lot of people, but stress is often the reason why people cannot stay healthy. It can really have a negative effect on our body, so try to avoid it as much as you can. But how can you do this? Organize first, and then start working. This little trick can save you a ton of time. Take up meditation or yoga. If you are not into that sort of stuff, just take a simple hike. Physical exercise is a good way to burn that built up energy and clear your mind. Not only that it’s good for your body, it will also raise your production levels, and keep you on track.

  1. Avoid too much alcohol

We all know that younger people like to party a lot, and that is perfectly fine and reasonable. We also realize that every party is 2x better with alcoholic beverages. Still, if you do this way too often, your body won’t have enough time to recover, and you might mess up your immune system, thus becoming more susceptible to all kinds of illnesses. Furthermore, after a night of heavy drinking, dehydration becomes a serious problem, resulting in headaches and lack of energy. Now, we are not being grumpy old men, telling you how to live your life. All we are saying is, when you get tired, it’s OK to tone it down a bit.

  1. Pay attention to your diet

Digital nomads often need a lot of energy, and during the busy days, in order to keep our bodies going, we reach out for the first available type of food. It just so happens that most of the time, junk food is the answer. While it will give us the necessary energy at that point, it is bad to eat like this in the long run, as you won’t get the nutrients your body desires. To avoid making this mistake, focus on the fresh foods, such as fruit and vegetables. If possible, go for the organic food. It can be a little more expensive, but it is worth it.

  1. Don’t forget about the exercise

Just because you are far away from home and your personal trainer, or your favorite gym, it doesn’t mean you need to completely let yourself go. A lot of digital nomads don’t sleep regularly, eat junk food and skip exercise. This all results in weight gains, and as a direct consequence, you will have a serious lack of energy. This only gets worse as time moves on, and it is a cycle you need to put an end to! There are a lot of fast exercises that won’t take up a lot of your time, and the results will speak for themselves. Don’t wait any longer, start living healthier today!
